Snowdroplet

'I heard tell that snowdrops have a type of unfreezable blood within their veins that allows those vivid green shards to spear the snowy ground and bloom whilst winter still sends his frost prince out to hunt.

Try as I might to find information on this in every book and paper on wildflowers I found none, I knew there was something more to be found. So out I went with fur lined boots and eyes of intrigue to the patch beneath the oak where soon snowdrops will hug the roots.

I put my ear to the ground, hoping for a sound. Any sign of life in the mulch rich earth. I heard it faint and fainter still, a tiny beat carved into the smallest space. I pulled the shard of green growth expecting a bulb. Instead I found a snowdroplet child. So steady was she in her dreaming that she did not notice the winds that now blew about her or the blackbirds busy rustling. It was not unfreezable blood after all but the warmth of the tiniest beating heart. 'Hello I said, I was not expecting you' Bleary eyed she looked back at me and replied 'Ah but they never do and yet, I am still here and will return every year just when you least expect it.' And that is how we sat for some time, tiny soul and a human form beneath the bare old oak.

I have brought her home for a while so that I may record her in my journal. After all the scientific books are great but they dont always get it right.'

My first creation of 2020 and a story of a snowdrops prayer to start the year with hope especially as we make our way towards imbolc. I hope you like her, I will have a small handful of these available set within handmade frames in my next update 🙏
